Additional comments (used with permission of the administrators)
Love the work, the people, the freedom and the support artist-run
centres allow, but I hate the shitty wage, the lack of benefits and
the absolute lack of funding stability from year to year. My monthly
wage is not much higher than the CARfac fee for a 4- 6-week solo exhibition
in the gallery. As much as I believe that artist must be paid for
exhibiting their artwork, the people who do all the administration,
programming and planning need to be acknowledged with better wages
and benefits. If not, the drain to the public and private enterprises
will continue to lure valuable and creative people away from the arts
in general and artist-run centre in particular.
Ivan Jurakic, Hamilton Artists Inc.
"With our small staff and large programming (on average 55% of
the budget goes to programming and 45% to administration) the staff
here experience high burnout and associated health problems. Our commitment
to contemporary art makes us carry on but it becomes difficult to
expand and build the organization. Also, salary levels make it difficult
for artist-run-centres to hang on to experienced staff, once they
become savvy, many are forced by necessity into the private sector."
